When Is the Right Time to File Your Income Tax Return?
Every year, taxpayers fall into one of two categories.
The first files the ITR as soon as the filing portal opens.
The second waits until the last few days before the due date.
Neither approach is ideal.
Filing too early may mean that all your financial information has not yet been updated. Your AIS, Form 26AS, TDS entries, bank interest, or broker statements may still be incomplete, increasing the chances of filing a revised return later.
On the other hand, waiting until the last week creates unnecessary pressure. If you discover a mismatch, a missing TDS credit, or an incorrect capital gains statement, you may not have enough time to rectify it before the deadline.
So, what is the right time?
The ideal time is when:
• Your Form 16 has been issued (if applicable).
• AIS and Form 26AS have been updated.
• Bank interest and broker statements are available.
• You have reconciled all sources of income and tax credits.
Once these checks are complete, file your return without unnecessary delay.
Remember, filing early is beneficial—but filing accurately is even more important.
Final Thought
Don't file your ITR because the portal is open.
Don't delay it because the due date is far away.
File it when your information is complete, verified, and accurate.
