Filing an ITR Is Easy. Filing a Correct ITR Is the Real Challenge.

Filing an ITR is not about entering numbers into a form. It is about verifying that every income and every tax credit has been correctly reported.

With online filing portals and pre-filled data, many taxpayers believe filing an Income Tax Return has become a five-minute task.

The truth is quite different.

The Income Tax Department provides information through Form 16, AIS and Form 26AS. These are excellent starting points—but they are not a substitute for verification.

Before you click the "Submit" button, ask yourself:

  1. Does my bank interest match the AIS?
  2. Have I reported all dividend income?
  3. Are my capital gains as per my broker's statement?
  4. Has every TDS deduction appeared in Form 26AS?
  5. Is there any income that has not been reported anywhere but still needs to be disclosed?

A pre-filled return is only as accurate as the information available to the system. It may not capture every detail, and it certainly cannot verify whether the information is complete.

That responsibility rests with the taxpayer.

A well-filed ITR is one where Form 16, AIS, Form 26AS, bank statements, broker statements, and your own records all tell the same story.

Take the time to reconcile before you file.

Because correcting a mistake after filing is always harder than preventing it.

Final Thought :

Don't file your ITR because the portal says it's ready.

File it only after you're confident it's correct.
