Financial Independence: The Freedom We Don't Talk About Enough
Every year on 15 August, we celebrate India's independence.
But perhaps there is another kind of independence worth thinking about:
Financial independence.
And it doesn't necessarily mean being rich.
It means having enough control over your money that money doesn't control your choices.
Can you handle an unexpected expense without borrowing?
Can you take a career or business decision without worrying only about the money?
Can you support your family even when income temporarily stops?
Can you say no to something that isn't right for you because you are not financially trapped?
That is what financial independence really means.
It starts with some simple habits:
• Spend less than you earn.
• Build an emergency fund.
• Avoid unnecessary debt.
• Invest consistently for long-term goals.
• Understand the tax impact of your financial decisions.
Tax planning also has a role to play. The objective should not be to find shortcuts to reduce tax, but to make informed decisions within the law. Money legally saved in tax can become money available for your future.
We often measure financial success by income, properties, cars or investments.
Perhaps a better question is:
"How much freedom does my money give me?"
Because ultimately, financial independence is not about having more money.
It is about having more choices.
This Independence Day, while we celebrate the freedom of our country, perhaps it is also a good time to think about building our own financial freedom.
